You're reading: Flower fantasies

Kyiv may be considered one of the greenest capitals in Europe, but there are really not enough flowers to strengthen the lead.

The annual flower show tries to fix that for some 55 years with unusual flower beds in Pechersk Landscape Park, better known as Spivoche Pole.

This year’s show will be devoted to vyshyvankas – the Ukrainian embroidered shirts.

Communal workers from each region were asked to come up with an embroidery pattern describing a time period or an area in Ukraine. They are in the process of conjuring flower sculptures from these patterns to present them on Aug 21.

The city administration leaked some prospective designs: flower carpets with scenes from village life, a portrait of Virgin Mary, swans made of roses, and an Easter feast table. Check out the show before September rains wash it away.
