An exhibition of contemporary Japanese art that has been displayed across the world for the last decade is coming to Kyiv.
The collection – titled “Paintings of Joy: Works by Japanese Artists of the ’90s” – consists of 27 works by nine distinguished Japanese painters.
The most famous among them is Takashi Murakami, the world’s third most expensive painter and the only visual artist listed in TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2008.
All the artists represented played a crucial role in revitalizing Japanese art at the end of the 20th century. They rediscovered painting, which had been considered a “dead” form of art at the time of their youth, at the same time moving beyond the limits of the “old style”.
The exhibition is taking place as a part of “Month of Japan in Ukraine” project, initiated by the Japanese embassy in Ukraine. Contradicting the title, it will be running for 2,5 months and will introduce all those interested in the famous Japanese tea ceremony, the art of origami and kendo sword-fighting.
