It’s hard to think of a stranger duo than the United States and Belarus. But music is known to cross borders.

American jazz vocalist Sharon Clark will perform together with Apple Tea band from the former Soviet state. The concert will be a part of the jazz project launched by radio journalist and jazz maniac Oleksiy Kogan earlier this year.

Clark headlined many jazz festivals across the world. Her strong vocals handle jazz, blues, soul and gospel music equally well. She took first place in the prestigious Billie Holiday Vocal Competition and appeared in the Baltimore Symphony.

Her partners in concert, six members of the Belarusian band, are well-known musicians in Eastern Europe. They say they got addicted to music in 1970’s listening to rock and jazz on the Voice of America radio or the records smuggled from abroad. After music schools and work in state ensembles, they formed their own band after the break-up of the Soviet Union.

In Kyiv, they will play Clark’s 2008 album “Do it Again – My tribute to Shirley Horn.” Horn was an American master pianist who was commended for her ability to accompany herself while singing.
