Lara Fabian to sing stylish European pop in the capital

Belgian-born pop singer and songwriter Lara Fabian is coming to perform in Kyiv next week. Fabian began singing, dancing, and taking piano lessons at a very young age and started taking formal music lessons at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels at the age of eight. During her 10 years of study there, Fabian started writing and performing her own songs, which were inspired as much by her classical vocal and music theory training as they were by Barbra Streisand and Queen. She sings in Italian, Spanish, and English in addition to her native French. She has also sung in Portuguese, and once in German, although she speaks neither language fluently.

Fabian took part in the Eurovision contest in 1988, where she performed for Luxembourg, a song entitled “Croire.” She finished fourth and that was the start of Lara’s international career, since “Croire” was translated in English and German languages.

Having moved to Montreal, she released her French-language debut album “Lara Fabian” in 1991. A sublime and passionate performer, she toured consistently throughout the 1990s, capturing the hearts of audiences around the world with her electrifying live shows. Her eloquent writing and soulful vocals drew her fans to her 1994 album “Carpe Diem,” her 1997 breakthrough album “Pure,” including such famous singles as “Tout,” “Je T’aime,” “Humana” and “La Difference,” which sold more than two million copies in France alone, and a best-selling live album which debuted at No.1 on the French album charts.

Interestingly, Fabian’s wax effigy, first displayed at Quebec City Museum, has now taken its place at famous Grevin Wax Museum, too. She became the first female Canadian singer honored by the Paris institution. She was also chosen by Walt Disney Studios to give her voice to Esmeralda in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”

Driven in part by the No.1 Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play hit, “I Will Love Again,” her first American album topped the Billboard Heatseekers new album chart. Her music has been featured in numerous film and television soundtracks including “Songs From Dawson’s Creek, Vol. 2,” “Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within,” and Steven Spielberg’s “A.I.” Her lastest album “9” showed an evolution in the music she performs. Over the past few years Fabian toured Europe, the show called “Un Regard 9” was a success.
