You're reading: ‘Silent Nights: Ukrainian Silent’ film festival

The festival of silent movies and modern music: “Silent Nights: Ukrainian Silent” will be held in Odesa June 18-20.

The program features 12 silent feature films and shorts as well as two talking movies from Ukrainian, Russian, German and French film archives. Each movie will be accompanied by a live soundtrack performed by Ukrainian and foreign musicians in styles ranging from jazz and lounge to trip-hop, electronic and experimental music.

The first day of the program (June 19) will feature famous silent movies by such legendary Ukrainian directors as Dziga Vertov, Oleksandr Dovzhenko and Georgi Tasin. The second day will be dedicated to 1920s-40s foreign films that are largely unknown to Ukrainian viewers, but feature actors and directors of Ukrainian descent: Anna Sten (actress, “The Wedding Night” by King Vidor), Xenia Desni (actress, “Princess Suwarin” by Johannes Guter), Gregori Chmara (actor, “Raskolnikow” by Robert Wiene), and directors Eugene Deslaw and Maya Deren.

Odesa was chosen as the location for the festival, since it was home to the first Ukrainian film studio that released numerous cinema masterpieces. The day part of the festival program will be held at Morska gallery, while the evening program will take place on the seashore next to the gallery.
