To get a rush of adrenaline with an Asian twist, check out the Thai boxing championship to be held in the country club Bolivar just outside Kyiv.
Professional boxers from Ukraine and Russia will clinch fists in this rare-for-Kyiv event.
Thai boxing is an extremely physical – violent for some – martial art sport. It is called Muay Thai in its native tongue.
The name means ‘the science of eight limbs.’ Fighters are allowed to make use of hands, feet, elbows and knees making up eight points of contact instead of two fists in traditional boxing.
The concept was probably born in battle after Siamese soldiers would lose their weapons. As the wars came to an end, fighters transferred the skill to ethnic festivals.
Gradually, the reenactments turned into magical shows with fighters following a set of rituals. It was even used as entertainment for kings.
The championship at Bolivar will feature some of the ancient spirit with a dragon dance, fire goblets and ethnic music during the boxing rounds. Before the fights, boxers perform a special dance, which on the surface looks like a traditional ritual of saying thank you to teachers and family. In reality, it is a sophisticated warm-up for the match.
They’ll wear a special head band with certain symbols meant to protect the warrior. Modern pop singers and ballet dancers will entertain during breaks.
