The winners of all-Ukrainian voting for “Seven Wonders of Ukraine” announced

The “Seven Wonders of Ukraine” campaign that was launched this spring has ended and the list of official Wonders was finally announced on Aug. 21. The Seven Wonders are: Kam’yanets preserve, ancient architecture complete with the fortresses, churches and bridges of picturesque Kam’yanets-Podilskiy; Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, the best known historical monument in Kyiv; Sofiyivka park in Uman, considered to be among the world’s masterpieces of garden park art; Sofiya Kyivska, the world famous 11th century cathedral in Kyiv; Khersones Tavriyskiy, the most notable monument of Greek culture in Ukraine, founded over 2,500 years ago; Hotyn fortress, a 1,000-year-old fortress in Chernivetska Region that remained a significant fortification system for many centuries; and Khortitsa, the biggest island on the Dnipro River, which has a blend of all the landscapes found in Ukraine and is the country’s biggest monument of Cossack culture.

The Wonders of Ukraine were decided by internet voting as well as through a poll.

The All-Ukrainian campaign “Seven Wonders of Ukraine” was initiated by the famous politician Mykola Tomenko this May. The regional committees presented their own “candidates” for the proud title of “Wonders,” which came to a total of 100. The expert council, comprised of scientists, historians and specialists in culture and tourism, then selected 21 objects – the official nominees for becoming the “Seven Wonders of Ukraine.” And finally, the seven winners were defined by about 77,000 people who took part in the voting at the official site of the campaign www.7chudes.in.ua.

As a result of the campaign, a guide book, leaflets and video materials containing information on all 21 nominees for “Seven Wonders of Ukraine” are to be issued in different languages. Moreover, the new “Seven Natural Wonders of Ukraine” campaign is to be launched soon, and perhaps it won’t be the end of it. I absolutely agree – positive thinking is what we need now – a reminder to all Ukrainian citizens that they are indeed living in wonderland (in case they had any doubts).
