After earning fifth place in this year’s Eurovision finale, the Ukrainian electro-folk band Go_A is continuing to gain momentum with its song “Shum” going viral on music streaming platform Spotify.
Updating daily, the world’s biggest music streaming service Spotify makes charts for all of its users to browse and listen to. The global Top 50 chart features the most-listened songs internationally at the moment, while the global Viral 50 chart has tunes that are quickly gaining popularity. There are also charts with top and viral songs for individual countries.
Go_A’s “Shum” was in fifth place in the Viral 50 list as of May 23, but soon beat the previous week’s number one hit “Castaways” from the children’s animated series “The Backyardigans” that has recently gone viral on Tik Tok.
It’s no surprise that “Shum” is such a hit among the listeners, as Go_A grabbed the second highest number of audience televotes at the Eurovision song contest, but the international jury’s votes brought the group down to place fifth overall.
The song has been streamed over 5 million times on Spotify. A mixture of traditional Ukrainian vocals and instruments and modern electronic beats, “Shum” was inspired by the folklore of the northern Polissia region of Ukraine, where villagers would welcome spring after a cold winter and make “shum”, or noise in Ukrainian, to encourage spring’s awakening.
“We’re continuing to make noise,” Go_A wrote on Facebook commenting on the news about the Spotify chart.
Italian rock group Måneskin, who won Eurovision with the “Zitti E Buoni” song, is currently in fourth place on the same chart.
