“Karmen.TV” offers a modernized version of Bizet’s classical ballet
“Karmen.TV” ballet is the first staging by the “Kyiv Modern Ballet” theater. Ukrainian philanthropist and president of Inteko company, Volodymyr Filipov, spent $500,000 to create “Karmen.TV.” The ballet was directed by Radu Poliktaru, who is considered to be a fashionable, well-known ballet director in Europe. He is best known for his opera-ballet “Le Forze del Destino”(Forces of Destiny), featuring young opera singer Olena Hrebenyuk as a soloist. A video clip based on this play won the Euro Video Contest. Music from “Le Forze del Destino” was also used in “Karmen.TV.”
With beautiful, dynamic action, “Karmen.TV” is a great example of a modern ballet performance. Thanks to Radu Poliktaru’s innovative choreography, and Andriy Zlobin’s and Anna Ipatyeva’s costumes and decorations, the characters of Prosper Merimee’s story are successfully carried into the 21st century, while keeping the charm of 19th century Spain and George Bizet’s legendary music intact. The troupe performing “Karmen. TV” consists of 16 professional dancers. The premiere of “Karmen.TV” ballet took place at Ivan Franko Theater on Oct. 25 and the upcoming show will be one of the last two shows of the ballet this year (the second one takes place Dec. 27), so don’t miss it!
