11th Independence American Film Festival

The annual Independence American Film Festival is back in Kyiv. Held partly online and partly at Zhovten cinema, it will provide a wide array of feature and documentary films made in the United States. This year’s program includes screenings of two Oscar-winning films: “Minari” telling the story of a Korean family of immigrants to the U.S. and “Sound of Metal” that follows a heavy-metal drummer as he is starting to lose hearing. The rest of the 21-film program also features “The Glorias” covering the story and life of feminist journalist Gloria Steinem and the documentary “The Apollo” spotlighting the iconic New York theater. All the pictures will be screened in English with Ukrainian subtitles.

‘Gorsad. 10 Years’ photo exhibit

The new exhibition at the White World gallery is bringing together the works of a Kyiv art trio Gorsad, created over the course of the past 10 years. Specializing in alternative and fashion photography, the group consists of Masha Romanyuk, Yulik Romanyuk and Vitya Vasyliyev. Through their bold and capturing photos, the trio explores the themes of youth’ self-identification and feelings.

‘Every Day. Art. Solidarity. Resistance’

The name of this exhibit was inspired by the slogan from the anti-government protests in Belarus, “Every Day,” which symbolizes the duration and continuation of the resistance against the dictatorship of Alexandr Lukashenko. Through all sorts of art forms, the group exhibition at Mystetskyi Arsenal explores solidarity, resistance tactics, revolutionary poets, the systemic issue of state violence and spatial and architectural dimensions of protests.

Kurazh Bazar 

Kyiv’s biggest charity flea market, Kurazh Bazar, is finally back. After being postponed several times due to the lockdown in Kyiv, vintage and art lovers can enjoy their weekend at the event that will be full of vendors selling fashionable clothing and all sorts of accessories. Delicious food and good music are also on the menu. In preparation for its long-awaited post-lockdown opening, Kurazh Bazar’s team is hosting a public clean-up day with music, snacks and good energy on May 8. Anyone who wants to help with cleaning and decorating the area can join between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on May 8.
