Editor’s Note: Ukraine extended its COVID-19 quarantine until Dec. 31 and tightened restrictions across the country on Sept. 23. Most cultural venues must operate at lower capacity, except those that allow only visitors who are at least partly vaccinated or who had tested negative for the disease in the past 72 hours. Check the event’s requirements before you go. To let us know about the upcoming shows, exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, festivals and parties, please send an e-mail to [email protected].
‘Romeo & Juliet’
While theaters are still closed in the U.K. due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the Royal National Theater in London decided to treat its audience with the filmed version of an iconic play, none other but William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” Directed by Simon Godwin, this adaptation is a bold take on the classic piece. The main characters are performed by Irish actress and singer Jessie Buckley, one of the leading actresses in the praised HBO mini-series “Chernobyl,” as well as British rising star Josh O’Connor, famous for his role in the Netflix award-winning “The Crown” series. “Josh O’Connor and Jessie Buckley captivate in a pacy, painterly and emotionally raw production,” the Guardian’s review reads. The play will be screened in English with Ukrainian subtitles.
“Romeo & Juliet.” Multiplex Cinema (Lavina Mall, 6D Berkovetska St.) Oct. 2. 3 p.m. Hr 190-240

It’s been a year since Ukraine lost one of its most internationally acknowledged photographers, Viktor Marushchenko. It’s hard to overstate Marushchenko’s influence on generations of local artists: His iconic school of photography has taught over 1,500 photographers since its foundation in 2004. Marushchenko himself had over 60 personal and group exhibitions and was greatly praised for his eye-opening documentary photographs. The current exhibition at Kyiv’s RA Gallery features some of Marushchenko’s selected photographs as well as photographs taken by his last students.
