You're reading: “Youth without Youth”

Coppola’s latest film released in the original

After nearly a decade, iconic moviemaker Francis Ford Coppola returned to the director’s chair with “Youth without Youth.” The film is an adaptation of Romanian-born writer/philosopher Mircea Eliade’s enigmatic 1975 novella of the same name. The modestly-budgeted film was financed by the director’s successful Californian vineyard’s profits.

The film stars Tim Roth, who portrays Dominic Matei, a seventy-year-old professor living in pre-WW II Romania. He contemplates suicide as the love of his life is dead and he’s unable to complete the main work of his life. While crossing the road on Easter Day, he’s struck by lightening and his charred body falls back to Earth. When he’s taken to the hospital, strange things begin to happen to him. His teeth fall out because new teeth are pushing in behind the old and he finds that he’s aged backwards to the age of forty. Soon enough, Dominic has recovered the youthful look and energy, but with increased intelligence combined with an old man’s wisdom.

He subsequently returns to his life’s work – deciphering and decoding ancient languages – but while he is traveling, Dominic has a chance encounter with Veronica (Alexandra Maria Lara), who is not only the spitting image of his former fiancee Laura, but also holds the key to unlocking one of the oldest and most mysterious languages in history. He comes to the attention of Professor Stanciulescu (Bruno Ganz) and he also is noticed by the Nazis who spirit Dominic away to a secluded retreat so that they can further study him.
