NEWS ITEM: After Kyiv's eccentric mayor of seven years Leonid Chernovetsky resigned on June 2, the date of the next mayoral election in Ukraine’s capital remains uncertain. Chernovetsky was sidelined by President Viktor Yanukovych two years ago and disappeared from the public eye while Oleksandr Popov, member of the ruling Party of Regions, took over. As the opposition demands elections in the capital, the date has to be set by parliament. Since the Verkhovna Rada will be on summer vacation from July 6 to Sept. 4, the date is likely to remain uncertain until at least autumn.
