When former police general Oleksiy Pukach was sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping and killing journalist Georgiy Gongadze in 2000, neither his lawyer nor the lawyer of Gongadze’s widow were satisfied. They both say the pre-trial investigation and the court failed to establish Pukach’s motives and ignored his testimony that he killed a journalist on orders from former president Leonid Kuchma and former speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn. The court has also ignored Gongadze’s widow’s plea to subpoena Kuchma and Lytvyn.
