On Aug. 9 police reported that Petro Melnyk, the ex-president of the nation’s tax university, escaped from house arrest where he was being monitored with an electronic monitor wrist bracelet on charges of taking a $15,000 bribe.
The police didn’t specify how he broke free of his
bracelet. On Aug. 11 prosecutors said they launched a criminal case
against the police in charge of monitoring bracelets. Melnyk is still
missing.
