NEWS ITEM: The makers of a film about the Soviet-era Ukrainian poet and dissident Vasyl Stus on Aug. 11 backtracked on plans to cut from the movie scenes featuring Viktor Medvedchuk, a pro-Russian politician who defended Stus at the poet’s show trial in 1980. During the sham trial, Medvedchuk failed to provide an adequate defense, taking the side of the Soviet state. Stus died five years later in a gulag under mysterious circumstances.
