NEWS ITEM: Pro-Russian politician and lawmaker Viktor Medvedchuk demanded that certain passages about him in a book on Soviet dissident Vasyl Stus by Ukrainian be removed. He sued author Vakhtang Kipiani for damaging his “honor, dignity and professional reputation.” A Kyiv court ruled in favor of Medvedchuk and decided to halt the further sales of a book. The effect, however, was the opposite of what Medvedchuk was trying to achieve— just a few hours after the news broke, publisher Vivat sold out all the remaining copies and now plans to print another 3,500 books before the court’s decision comes into force.
