NEWS ITEM: On Oct. 29, Ukrainian forces and Russia-backed militants started a three-day mutual disengagement at the front-line town of Zolote. Both sides will pull back one kilometer in an effort to prevent shooting and casualties. The condition for disengagement was seven days without ceasefire violations. However, Ukraine went ahead with the withdrawal despite some shooting the day before. Disengagement is an important — albeit not always popular — first step in Zelensky’s campaign promise to end the war. The next step in disengagement will begin Nov. 4.
