NEWS ITEM: On Feb. 25, journalists of Nashi Groshi investigative journalism project revealed embezzlement schemes worth millions of dollars in Ukraine’s defense sector allegedly led by a son of Oleh Hladkovskiy, a top ally of President Petro Poroshenko. The younger Hladkovskiy and his partners allegedly sold spare parts for military vehicles smuggled from Russia to Ukraine’s defense enterprises at inflates prices. The revelations caused public outrage. Hladkovskiy denied all accusations but suspended his work as deputy head of the National Council for Security And Defense. The story arrived one month before the presidential election, where Poroshenko will seek re-election relying heavily on positioning himself as a patriot and a big supporter of the Ukrainian army.
