A rally takes place on the St. Sophia Square in the center of Kyiv on Jan. 22, 1919, in celebration of the signing of the Unification Act by the governments of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic. The Mykhailovsky (Michael) Cathedral, seen in the back, was demolished by the Soviet authorities in the 1930s and rebuilt only in the late 1990s.

On Jan. 22, Ukraine celebrated 100th anniversary of the union of the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Ukrainian People’s Republic — the first attempt in modern times to form a Ukrainian state on Ukrainian territory. The two states united in 1919.

Every year on Jan. 22, Ukrainians form symbolic human chains around the country to celebrate the unity of Ukraine.
