A summer squall of protests

Prev 01 12 Next

Supporters and opponents of Yulia Tymoshenko have camped out on Kreshchatyk Street 44, near the courtroom where the ex-prime minister is facing charges of abusing her authority in reaching a Jan. 19, 2009, gas deal with the Kremlin. The trial started more than a month ago on what Tymoshenko says are bogus charges designed to disqualify her from elective office. She accuses President Viktor Yanukovych, who defeated her by 3.5 percentage points in the 2010 presidential election, of orchestrating the court proceedings to gain a felony conviction against her. She was arrested on Aug. 5 for contempt of court and has been held in Lukyanivska pre-trial detention center since then. The arrest triggered protests by hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of her followers who pitched tents on the sidewalk of Kyiv's main street. (Photos: AP)
