Tens of thousands of opposition supporters marched in the Belarusian capital of Minsk on Sept. 20, 2020, defying a heavy security force presence that included water cannons and armored vehicles.

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled the ex-Soviet state for 26 years, declared himself the victory of a rigged Aug. 9 election over Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, claiming 80 percent of the vote in the August 9, elections. But Belarusians and the West say the election was not free or fair, and some nations have recognized Tikhanovskaya as president.
