Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Belarus on Nov. 8 to protest against the disputed re-election of Oleksandr Lukashenko, who has been the president of Belarus since 1994. Mass protests have taken place every Sunday since the Aug. 9 election.
Protesters believe that Lukashenko has rigged the election and demand that he hands the power to Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, a political novice who is believed to have won.
Tikhanovskaya is on a tour meeting with political leaders across the European Union. On Nov. 7, she congratulated U.S. President-elect Joseph Biden with the victory, and said that she hopes that soon the newly-elected president of the U.S. will meet with “the president of the new, free Belarus, elected fairly.”
