The ninth Sunday protest rally “March for the release of political prisoners” took place on Oct. 4, 2020 in Minsk after the Aug. 9 presidential election in Belarus, rigged by dictator Alexander Lukashenko, in power since 1994. It gathered more than 100,000 participants. Belarusian police used water cannons to disperse a rally.

In Kyiv, meanwhile, demonstrators carried the historical white-red-white flag of Belarus during a rally in solidarity with Belarusian opposition supporters.

Much of the West no longer recognizes Lukashenko as the legitimate president and backs exiled leader, Svitlana Tikhanovskaya.
