Hundreds of bicycle enthusiasts celebrated the 15th All-Ukrainian Bike Day with a ride across Kyiv downtown on June 5.

The event took place just days after World Bicycle Day celebrated annually on June 3.

Aside from the bike fans, the ride attracted those who use other alternative means of transportation such as electric scooters and unicycles, skates and roller skates.

The participants gathered at the starting point at Sofiyska Square to take a group photo. Then they rode across the city center down to Podil district, finishing on Kyiv’s left bank, all the way across Dnipro River at Muromets Park. There, the celebration proceeded with entertainment, food and lounge zones.

Every year activists hold Bike Day in Kyiv to promote an active lifestyle and draw the public attention to the poor bicycle infrastructure.

As of 2020, just about 6% of Kyiv roads had lanes designed for bikes, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, making it unsafe for riders to get around the city.

This year, the event’s participants demanded that the authorities build 100 kilometers of bicycle lanes leading to the city center from remote districts by 2023.
