On the afternoon of Jan. 7, the day Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas, Kyiv hosted a national parade of the Christmas stars.
The Christmas star, a traditional star symbol made of colored paper and ribbons and put on a stick, resembles the star that appeared in the sky when Jesus Christ was born. The star is an important part of Ukrainian traditions of celebrating Christmas, serving as an essential accessory for the carol singers.
Participants of the Christmas Star Parade gathered next to St. Michael’s cathedral on 3 p.m. and then walked through the Kyiv central streets singing carols.
