Long live the king! Some 100 people attended an event to mark King’s Day in the Embassy of the Netherlands in Kyiv on April 26. King’s Day marks the birthday of the current Dutch monarch, and is celebrated as a national holiday in the Netherlands. King Willem-Alexander, who assumed the throne following his mother’s abdication in 2013, was born on April 27, 1967. In the Netherlands, King’s Day, or Koningsdag, is a widely celebrated national holiday. For the celebration, Dutch people dress in orange, the color of the Dutch royal family. The practice is known as “orange madness,” or “oranjegekte” in Dutch.
