On Aug. 28, several dozen people gathered in a park in the center of Kyiv to commemorate Pavel Sheremet, a journalist who was murdered on July 20.
The ceremony at the Heavenly Hundred Park marked 40 days after Sheremet’s death, following the Orthodox Christian tradition that rules that the soul of the dead stays on Earth for 40 days before ascending to heaven.
The guests were served the sweets that Sheremet loved, and were offered to donate to a children’s charity.
Sheremet was killed by a car explosion as he was driving to host a morning radio show. The police say that two unidentified people, a man and a woman, have allegedly planted a bomb in his car at the night before. No suspects were arrested. The investigation goes on.
Sheremet was born in Belarus, from where he was deported in 1998 for opposing the regime of Alexander Lukashenko. He continued his career as a journalist and a TV host in Russia. He relocated to Ukraine in 2012 and started working in Ukrainska Pravda.
