Central Europe, including the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria and Hungary, have been hit by some of the worst flooding since 2002, when the region was hit by the so-called floods of a century. German Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged €100 million in relief for victim.
The floods have claimed their first casualties, with seven deaths in the Czech Republic and three in Germany. Meanwhile, Austria saw two people were reported dead and two missing,
according to a European Commission update on Tuesday evening.
The region’s previous mass floods took place in 1997 and 2002. Experts warn that climate change is only likely to increase the frequency of extreme weather events, means that in the future this could become a regular occurrence.
