On May 2, Ukrainians marked the five year anniversary of one of the bloodiest days in the modern history of Odesa. Throughout early 2014, street battles took place as armed Moscow-supporting gangs and their Kyiv-supporting counterparts clashed in the historic Black Sea port city. Six people lost their lives throughout weeks of prolonged violence but the worst incident occurred on May 2 when the the city’s Trade Unions House caught fire amid the clashes. The resulting inferno claimed the lives of 42 pro-Russian activists inside.
