As the novel coronavirus spreads around the world, the Ukrainian government is taking action to prevent it from gaining ground in Ukraine. Despite having only five officially registered cases, among the lowest number in Europe, Ukraine is shutting down air and train travel and closing places where large numbers of people gather.

The result is eerie: empty airports, restaurants and shops.

Ukraine has already shuttered educational institutions and banned mass events for three weeks.

On March 17, Ukraine will halt all international flights to and from the country. The next day, it will ban all domestic flights.

Also on March 17, Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa and other major Ukrainian cities will close all their restaurants, cafes and shopping malls to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.
