For the first half of winter, it looked like Kyiv was in for a repeat of the unusually warm winter it had in 2019-2020. It changed in mid-January.
The city saw almost no snow or subzero temperatures for the first half of winter. Snowfalls finally started on Jan. 13, and by the weekend of Jan. 16-17, the city was covered with snow.
With the snow came the first sunny days in a while, encouraging many Kyivans to brave the frosty weather and go sledding in the city’s parks.
The city is experiencing its coldest temperatures of the winter, between -13 and -19 degrees Celsius (from 8 to -2 Fahrenheit). The cold snap will end on Jan. 21, with the temperature going back to 1-3 degrees Celsius (33 – 37 Fahrenheit).
