Sept. 7  saw the first large-scale release of Ukrainians from Russian prisons since Russia started its war against Ukraine in 2014. Russia and Ukraine each released 35 prisoners after months of negotiations between the two countries’ leaders, but more than 200 Ukrainian prisoners remain.

The liberated Ukrainians arrived in a chartered plane at Boryspil International Airport outside Kyiv in the early afternoon. They included film director Oleg Sentsov as well as the 24 Ukrainian sailors, who had been captured in the Black Sea in 2018.

Friends, family and top officials gave the returning prisoners a heroes’ welcome.
