Today, on Sept. 2, Odesa celebrates the 226th anniversary of its founding. Citizens and city officials came to take part in the ceremony of raising the Odesa flag. Odesa, home to 1 million people nearly 500 kilometers south of Kyiv, is one of the nation’s major cities and an economic engine with its Black Sea ports and tourist destinations. Founded during the Russian Empire when tsar Catherine the Great ruled, the city is also known for its storied architecture and distinct culture that makes it home to many people who came from other nations.
