A group of 50 activists marched in Kyiv on June 20 to commemorate Belarusian activist Vitold Ashurak, who died in a Belarusian prison on May 21.

Ashurak participated in the large-scale protests against Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko’s victory in the rigged presidential elections in August 2020. He was later arrested and sentenced to prison. Fellow activists believe that Ashurak was tortured or murdered.

“Heroes don’t die! Glory to the hero of Belarus Vitold Ashurak!” the marchers chanted. “Long live Belarus! Glory to Ukraine!”

The procession marched from Independence Square to Hrushevs’kogo Street, where participants laid flowers honoring Mikhail Zhiznevskiy, a young man from Belarus who was killed there during the EuroMaidan Revolution that ousted pro-Kremlin President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.
