POKROVSK, Ukraine — The city of Pokrovsk some 530 kilometers southeast of Kyiv, close to the front line, is an important base for Ukraine as it fends off attack by Russia. It is also where the biggest military hospital in the Donbas war zone is located.

The Pokrovsk hospital has been working on the regular basis since February 2015, and it still receives soldiers for treatment from all along the 400-kilometer front line.

The hospital medical staff say the worst days of the war, of 2014 and 2015, which saw fearful casualties rates, are hopefully gone forever. Now most of their patients are treated for illnesses or slight injuries.

However, some soldiers still come in very seriously wounded, and spend their final hours or days in the hospital. The Pokrovsk hospital’s medics also help soldiers heal not only their combat wounds, but also psychological trauma from battle.
