The morning of Oct. 21, was rich for rallies in support and against various laws that might come up for debate during the current week in parliament.
Activists of several civic and youth organizations, including Institute Respublika, Vidsich, Free Trade Unions of Ukraine, and others protested in front of the Verkhovna Rada committees against the bill on peaceful assembly, which is registered under number 2508 in parliament. The bill, which they say is a clone of an earlier one that failed to pass, will limit the right for peaceful assembly. However, even the civic community is split in their assessment of this bill.
In the meantime, Stop Censorship and New Citizens, two journalistic organizations, were rallying in the same place in support of another bill that they said will improve public’s access to official information. The activists insisted that the bill, which is registered under number 0947 in parliament, should be included in this week’s agenda. By mid-day, however, it did not feature in the list up for review this week by mid-day.
