Kyiv Day is celebrated the last weekend in May, giving summer a big kickoff. The Ukrainian capital of more than 3 million people, like much of the rest of the world, has had rough times battling the COVID-19 pandemic. And thus, the Day of Kyiv events were more sparse than in years past, when street performances and fireworks would mark the occasion.
But the sunny warm weather drew Kyivans outside. They filled the streets and parks, enjoying Kyiv in full bloom as summer starts.
The fountains getting turned on was another sign that life was getting back to normal after a tough two-month lockdown (from March 12 to May 12) to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
Other signs of normalcy returning: Intercity train and bus service restarted on June 1, indoor restaurants are set to open on June 10 and, maybe just maybe, international flights will resume sometime later this month.
