The ghettos of Kyiv

Prev 01 13 Next

Just a step out of the one of Kyiv's most fancy hotels, Premier Palace, hidden from the curious eye by newly repaired facades, is a dead town right in the heart of Ukraine's capital. The Stalker excursion, announced by the head of the Kyiv administrative commission of culture and tourism Oleksandr Bryhinets, revealed an apocalyptic image of Kyiv on the eve of Euro 2012 football championship – more than 10 almost ruined buildings in downtown Kyiv. The buildings along the streets Pushkinska, Chervonoarmijska and Shevchenko Blvd seem to be in the state of emergency. Some of these buildings have been ruined on purpose, as planned for the other construction projects, by the private companies. And even though the attempt to privatize them was proved to be illegal in court, as they belong to the city's communal property, the buildings are still not back in operation since 2005.The other buildings can be considered architectural monuments of late 19th and early 20th century and their reconstruction has been delayed for decades for unknown reasons as well.Daryna Shevchenko(Photos by Ganna Bernyk)
