Ukraine on Aug. 24 celebrated the 28th anniversary of its independence.
President Volodymyr Zelensky presided over the March of Dignity, which was held on Maidan Nezalezhnosti and Heavenly Hundred Alley. Zelensky organized the event instead of a traditional military parade, which some believe to be a relic of the Soviet past and others see as necessary due to Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Those who did not wish to join Zelensky’s event, including nationalists and supporters of ex-President Petro Poroshenko, took part in a different ceremony – the March of Defenders from Taras Shevchenko Park to Maidan Nezalezhnosti and Mykhailivska Square.
