The Kyiv Post subscribes to Agence France-Presse photo agency, and that means enjoying a lot of photographs from its longtime photographer Sergei Supinsky. Getty Images says it has more than 35,000 of his images on file. Supinsky said he started to work for international agencies in the late 1980s, giving him a front-row seat to many historical moments for Ukraine.

Quite unexpectedly, AFP re-upped his photos, those of photographer Anatoly Sapronenkov and others that were taken during Ukraine’s celebration of national independence in 1991. The Kyiv Post is not sure why, but usually it signifies that an accompanying story of some sort is in the works. We just want to share them with our audience to bring back that hopeful time nearly 30 years ago on a gray autumn day of this tumultuous 2020.
