Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina’s bronze medal in the women’s singles event on July 31 added to the performances of Ukrainian athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Thanks to Svitolina’s smashing performance, Ukraine has collected five bronze medals at the Olympics since they kicked off on July 23, the day some Ukrainian athletes have been awaiting for years to try to leave their mark in the world’s sports history.

A success-story so far for swimmer Mykhailo Romanchuk, who won a bronze medal in the men’s 800-meter freestyle race and set an Olympic record on the same occasion.

Daria Bilodid won a bronze medal in women’s judo, Igor Reizlin was third in fencing,  and Olena Kostevych and Oleh Omelchuk both won bronze in the 10-meter air pistol mixed team contest.

For this year’s edition of the Olympics, Ukraine is represented by 158 athletes competing in 25 sports or 30 disciplines, according to the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine.
