Ukrainian sculptor Volodymyr Zhuravel is the creator of a well-known monument on Kyiv’s Poshtova Square depicting the mythological figures of Kiy, Schek, Khoryy and their sister Lybid. According to the Primary Chronicle of the Kyivan Rus, they are the founders of Kyiv.
Now, Zhuravel has returned to the site of his monument to put on a performance dedicated to the doctors doing battle with the COVID-19 pandemic and saving lives. Specifically, he wanted to draw attention to the 3,208 medical workers in Ukraine who were infected with COVID-19 while in the line of duty — often due to a lack of personal protective equipment like masks and special biohazard suits.
On May 13, Zhuravel and his assistant put symbolic biohazard suits on the four figures. He also placed polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests — the most accurate way of diagnosing COVID-19 — in their hands.
As of the morning of March 13, Ukraine has recorded 16,425 cases of COVID-19. In total, 439 people have died from the disease.
