This year, Ukraine marks the 7th anniversary of one of the most fundamental events in the country’s history, 2013-2014 EuroMaidan Revolution.
Before it grew into a nationwide anti-government protest, which eventually ousted ex-President Viktor Yanukovych, it started as a small student rally on Nov. 21, 2013, on Kyiv’s central Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square). The peaceful demonstrators demanded that Yanukovych reverse his decision — under pressure from Moscow — to reject Ukraine’s association agreement with the European Union.
Three months later, the unrest ended tragically after the government forces led by Yanukovych took the lives of nearly 100 protesters, also known as the Heavenly Hundred, in central Kyiv.
Ukrainians honored the memory of the slain demonstrators on Nov. 21 by laying flowers at their memorial on Maidan Nezalezhnosti.
