U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s highly anticipated trip to Ukraine began on Friday, Jan. 31 with his arrival in Kyiv.

The high-ranking American official started the day meeting with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko. He then visited the St. Michael’s Cathedral in Kyiv, where he laid flowers at the memorial to Ukrainian soldiers killed in the ongoing Russian-backed war in the country’s east, and met with Metropolitan Epiphanius, the leader of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which recently celebrated the first anniversary of its independence from Russia.

Later in the morning, Pompeo met with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
