Ukrainians celebrated National Flag Day on Aug. 23, one day prior to Ukraine’s Independence Day, as war veterans raised Ukraine’s largest national flag on the property of Kyiv’s National World War II Museum near the Motherland Monument.
The flag is 24 meters long and 16 meters wide while the flagpole is more than 90 meters in height.
The ceremony included war veterans from eastern Donbas, military representatives, cultural leaders, politicians and the diplomatic community.
Ukraine’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko also attended the event.
“A lot of time and effort was needed to complete this project so that the national flag would be gliding over Ukraine’s capital,” Kyiv’s mayor said. “We are raising Ukraine’s highest and largest flag – one of the main symbols of the nation.”
Once the flag was raised, Crimean Tatar pop singer Jamala sang Ukraine’s national anthem.
