While the weather is noticeably spring-like in Ukraine’s prairies and forests, the winter season is still in full swing in the Carpathian mountains. This week, heavy snowfall created a growing risk of avalanches, with the State Emergency Service of Ukraine from raising the avalanche risk in the Carpathians to level 3 on February 21.
That didn’t stop winter die-hards, who enjoyed the snowfall with skiing and hiking along the mountain slopes.
To prevent any incidents, the service recommends that tourists register at a local rescue service unit, hike with experienced climbers, bring warm clothes and climbing equipment and to stop hiking if adverse weather conditions develop.
