The town of Koriukivka was visited by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Oct. 6, 2021. This small Chernihiv Oblast town was the site of one of the most brutal massacres of World War II. In 1943, 6,700 local residents were murdered by Nazi SS forces while the town burned to the ground. Steinmeier’s visit brings public attention to the growing provincial capital, which has a horrendous past.

A German-funded historiographic project is set to shed light on the Koriukivka massacre which has been largely forgotten in Ukraine.

The joint German-Ukrainian-Hungarian project is meant to document the testimonies of witnesses and their family members, dig deep into the archives and eventually publish documents better explaining what happened in Koriukivka over 78 years ago.
