How a one-time student party became one of Kyiv’s trendiest bars

HVLV (prounounced Khvylovy) is one of the hottest bars in Kyiv. The bar’s name means “wavy” in Ukrainian and is also the surname of Mykola Khvylovy, a prominent Ukrainian writer persecuted by the Soviet Union. Over five years, HVLV has transformed from a friends-only pub to a trendy venue for free-spirited parties. But it wasn’t always such a popular bar. In 2015, it was founded by students from Kyiv Mohyla Academy. Initially, they rented a basement to hold an afterparty for a film festival they had organized.
