Pro-democracy rallies have rocked the streets across Belarus following the presidential election on Aug. 9, which is largely believed to have been rigged in favor of incumbent president Alexander Lukashenko. Opposition activists, journalists and protesters have faced persecution, arrests, detentions and torture.
Despite risking being expelled from university, Belarusian students actively took part in the demonstrations. However, due to constant pressure and the threat of detention, some students were forced to flee the country. A number of them are now political refugees in Ukraine.
